Poco después de pedirle a un camionero que lo llevara, Johnny McBride sufre graves quemaduras y sufre de amnesia total cuando el vehículo en el que viaja explota una llanta y cae por un terraplén en un incendio. Más tarde, McBride recibe un aviso de un conocido de que una foto suya estaba colocada en un lugar destacado en la ventana de un estudio de fotografía en una ciudad llamada Lyncastle, por lo que Johnny se va inmediatamente al pueblo con la esperanza de que algo allí le refresque la memoria.
